The purpose of this investigation was to determine the behavior of imperfections during plastic deformation of high purity highly perfect single crystals of iron. To carry out this investigation, it was necessary to develop the equipment and techniques necessary for growing large single crystals and to obtain accurate, quantitative measurements of the behavior of imperfections during plastic straining.

There were four main accomplishments of the present program; viz., the growth of highly perfect iron single crystals, the measurement of crystal perfection as a function of plastic strain by rocking curve measurements, the measurement of the stress-strain relationship for highly perfect iron single crystals, and the comparison of the stress-strain relationship with the etch pit and rocking curve measurements. Possible dislocation interpretations of the observed data are presented.
