Initial preparations of polyphosphorane polymers based on phenylphosphonyl diazide and several bis-tertiary phosphines were carried out. The thermal stability of the polymer based upon an aromatic linked bis-tertiary phosphine was found to be considerably higher than that of the corresponding methylene-linked polymers (approximate beginning of decomposition at 477 C. and 278 C., respectively). In addition, a series of mono-and bisphosphon-, sulfon-, and silylimidophosphorane polymer prototypes has been prepared. Thermal and hydrolytic properties of these materials have been investigated. Bis-phosphoranes based upon p-phenylene and 4,4'-biphenylene bistertiary phosphines were found to have the highest approximate beginnings of decomposition (by differential thermal analysis) of approximately 465 C. and 460-475 C. Various functionally substituted phosphoranes were also prepared in order to investigate potential methods for the cross-linking of phosphorane chains as well as to investigate methods for the synthesis of desired intermediates.
