The thickness of the lubricating film between a pair of rolling-contact disks has been measured for a variety of loads, speeds, temperatures, and lubricant types, by using an X-ray technique. An empirical equation has been derived from the film-thickness data. The variation of film thickness with inlet viscosity and speed in this equation is similar to theoretical predictions. However, the empirical equation shows film thickness to be much more strongly dependent on loading than the usual theory shows. Modifications to the film-thickness theory with allowance for thermal and non-Newtonian effects have been made, which do not directly improve the agreement between theory and experiment, but which may provide clues for further study. In addition to the film-thickness studies, a miniaturized manganin pressure transducer has been located on the outer race of an 85-mm bore bearing. Preliminary pressure data have been obtained for a variety of bearing loadings up to 300,000-psi maximum contact pressure.
