Abstract Text:

The flow field of nozzles exhausting into a vacuum was investigated both analytically and experimentally. The applicability of the method of characteristics for jet expansions into a free molecular environment is discussed. Fifteen-degree, half-angle, conical nozzles with area ratios of 1.0 to 207 were tested with argon and nitrogen at total pressures of 100, 50, and 35 psia. Ambient pressures of .0001 to .000001 torr yielded total pressure to ambient pressure ratios of 10,000,000 to 1,000,000,000. Properties of the flow field were determined by the use of flat plates and flow direction vanes.
