Development of High Temperature Seal-Lubricant Deposit Evaluation Techniques
Report Number: AFAPL TR 65-3 Author(s): Pfoutz, Billy D.; Knox, William G.; Gannon, Frank Corporate Author: Koppers Co Inc Monroeville PA Laboratory: Air Force Aero Propulsion Laboratory Publication Date: 5/3/1965 Pages: 23 Features: + Graph(s) + Table(s) Contract: AF 33(615)-1112 Project: 3044 Task: 304401 AD Number: AD0617072 Photo Enhancement: Not Needed
Abstract Text:
Testing techniques for evaluating experimental gas turbine lubricants in face-riding main shaft jet engine seals at temperatures representative of high mach aircraft have been under development. Using the ASD Seal Rig, repeatable evaluation techniques were developed for MIL-L-9236 type lubricants that were indicative of performance in engines. The present phase of the program is directed towards refining evaluation equipment and preparing the rig for more advanced research work. During the period covered, internal seal head air heating to 1160F, preliminary evaluation studies using 0-60-19 and 0-60-18 lubricants, and engineering features of a new seal head design were investigated. An adaptor to permit the use of the seal head with Erdco test equipment is being designed.

Storage Stability Of High Temperature Fuels
Report Number: AFAPL TR 65-13 Part 3 Author(s): Whisman, M. L.; Ward, C. C. Corporate Author: Bureau Of Mines Bartlesville Okla Petroleum Research Center Laboratory: Air Force Aero Propulsion Laboratory Publication Date: 2/1/1967 Pages: 95 Features: + Diagram(s) + Graph(s) + Table(s) Contract: DO(33-615)-64-1009 Project: 3048 Task: 304801 AD Number: AD0647787 Photo Enhancement: Not Needed
Abstract Text:
The report covers an investigation of the influence of fuel constituents during storage on thermal stability of JP-6 and other high temperature fuels. The major objectives of the program were satisfied by the successful development and evaluation of several methods utilizing radiotracers to determine the causes of thermal instability as well as predicting thermal stability quality of high temperature fuels during storage. Ninety-four test blends of 12 fuels and 9 radioactive fuel compounds were prepared and tested in the evaluation of a microscale thermal stability procedure developed for the purpose of determining the contribution of selected fuel components to thermally induced deposits. Eight-eight of these test blends were retested after 26 weeks storage at 130F to determine the effect of storage upon deposit-forming tendencies. Analysis of the data obtained in this study resulted in a further study of thermal decomposition of a fuel antioxidant additive. An investigation of several variables associated with an in situ hydrogenation method using tritium as the index of reactivity was completed as an effort to develop a sensitive and accurate analytical technique for very low concentrations of olefins in hydrocarbon fuels. In addition, initial steps were taken toward obtaining or synthesizing radioactive materials and reference standards essential to a continuation of this program along a similar line of approach.

Rotor-Bearing Dynamics Design Technology. Part VII: The Three Lobe Bearing And Floating Ring Bearing
Report Number: AFAPL TR 65-45 Part 7 Author(s): Lund, J. W. Corporate Author: Mechanical Technology Inc Latham NY Laboratory: Air Force Aero Propulsion Laboratory Publication Date: 2/1/1968 Pages: 292 Contract: AF 33(615)-3238 Project: 3048 Task: 304806 AD Number: AD0829895 Photo Enhancement: Not Needed
Abstract Text:
The volume treats three special bearing types selected for study because of their favorable stability characteristics and, hence, their potential for use in high speed rotating machinery applications. The three bearing types are: (a) The Three Lobe Journal Bearing; (b) The Floating Sleeve Bearing with an Incompressible Lubricant; (c) The Floating Sleeve Bearing with a Compressible Lubricant. In the floating sleeve bearings, the ring is prevented from rotating but is otherwise free to move. The ring is floated by pressurizing the outer film of the bearing. In the case of a compressible lubricant, the inner film is pressurized as well. The volume gives extensive design data in form of charts and tables from which the bearing dimensions can be obtained for a given application. Data are given for bearing flow, friction power loss and the speed at which hydrodynamic instability sets in. In addition, two computer programs accompany the volume, and instructions and listings of the programs are included. The programs may be used to obtain data for cases not covered by the presented design data.

Investigation of RF Radiation as a Secondary Phenomenon for Use in Checkout
Report Number: AFAPL TR 65-46 Author(s): James W. Ballard; Eugene F. Horn Corporate Author: Systems Research Laboratories, Inc. Laboratory: Air Force Aero Propulsion Laboratory Publication Date: 6/1/1965 Pages: 105 Features: + Diagram(s) + Foldout(s) + Graph(s) + Photo(s) + Table(s) Contract: AF 33(615)-1489 Project: 8119 Task: 811925 AD Number: AD0619899 Photo Enhancement: Complete
Abstract Text:
The emission of radio-frequency (rf) radiation was studied over a range of frequencies from .15 to 400 megacycles per second (Mc/sec) for small gaps of .5 to 10 mils. The electrodes were .050-inch in diameter with polished plane ends which formed the gap. Most of the work reported was done in air at atmospheric pressure with nickel electrodes although argon gas and gold, aluminum, and copper electrodes were employed. Considerable attention was given to shielding, and the effect of receiver and generator circuitry. The effect of antennas and cables were also studied in relation to rf radiation emission and reception. Radiation from malfunctioning systems is attributed to a brush type discharge across very small discontinuities within the electrical parts. These discontinutities in a number of cases were found to be essentially contact, i.e. less than a few thousand angstroms. The mechanism causing breakdown was found to be the avalanche type with the involvement of secondary electronic emission.
