Relationship Between The Minex And The Helium-Driven Modified Coker In The Measurement Of Jet Fuel Thermal Stability
Report Number: AFAPL TR 67-17 Author(s): Lander, Herbert R., Jr.; Zengel, Alan E. Corporate Author: Air Force Aero Propulsion Lab Wright-Patterson AFB OH Publication Date: 2/1/1967 Pages: 54 Project: 0 Task: 0 AD Number: AD0653188
Abstract Text:
Six different jet fuels were tested for their resistance to thermal deposition by two versions of the CRC modified coker and the Minex heat exchanger. The test results are compared by plotting the coker deposit code rating versus coker-preheater-tube wall temperature. The temperature of the tube wall, where large quantities of deposits form, is compared with the temperature of the Minex fuel-out, where tube fouling due to deposits occurs. Fouling is indicated by a change in measured heat transfer coefficient. The relative ranking of the six fuels was the same on the Minex as on the helium-driven modified coker. The pump-driven modified coker, however, gave a relative ranking that correlated with neither the Minex nor the gas-driven coker. It was concluded that the pump-driven modified coker was not a satisfactory test tool for fuels with a resistance to thermal degradation above 500F. It was also apparent that the pump on the coker was affecting the test results when fuels of high thermal stability were tested. The most obvious reason for this effect is that the fuels with thermal stability above 500F were treated to remove trace materials, and that these trace materials provide a degree of boundary lubrication. Without this degree of boundary lubrication, the coker pump may wear and release wear products that affect the test results.

Deposition Of Selected Synthetic Lubricants In The Rtd Seal Rig
Report Number: AFAPL TR 67-29 Author(s): Knox, William G.; Gannon, Frank T.; DeBrohun, Leon J. Corporate Author: Koppers Co Inc Monroeville PA Publication Date: 4/1/1967 Pages: 39 Project: 0 Task: 0 AD Number: AD0814572
Abstract Text:
Testing techniques for evaluating experimental gas turbine lubricants in face-riding main shaft jet engine seals at temperatures representative of high mach aircraft have been under development. Using the RTD-1 procedure, a total of six runs were made using five lubricants. These lubricants were rated in regard to test rig life determined by seal-lubricant interaction. Additional information on deposit forming characteristics, viscosity and acid number change, seal wear, and oil consumption is reported for each lubricant evaluated. A portable instrument console and a portable test oil cart were constructed as a part of this contract. These replaced existing items and were constructed to conform with current practice at WPAFB.

Abstract Text:
Current booster vehicles have the capability to inject heavy payloads into orbit, but the geometry requirements of the payloads for manned missions are larger than the vehicle compartment dimensions. To fully exploit these manned and unmanned vehicle system capabilities, an experiment is planned to demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the construction of large structures in space utilizing the technology of expandable structural-material systems. This design study defines the detail configuration of an experiment to demonstrate the deployment in space of small scale parabolic structures of high geometric accuracy which may be manually assembled by an astronaut. An experiment will also demonstrate the applicability of expandable structural-material systems to an airlock which has been designed to exhibit the operational characteristics for use on future manned vehicle missions. This study indicates that parabolic structures up to 100 ft in diameter can be assembled by man in space, and that an Elastic Recovery Airlock can be designed to provide the manned mission requirements. These structures can be constructed of flexible materials and modular components which can be stowed in small high density packages in current booster payload compartments.

Rapid Shelter Flooring And Helicopter Landing Sites
Report Number: AFAPL TR 67-43 Author(s): Gifford, F.; Bilelo, A. M.; Pascador, G.; Rembert, R. S. Corporate Author: LTV Aerospace Corp Dallas Tx Vought Aeronautics Div Publication Date: 5/1/1967 Pages: 309 Project: 0 Task: 0 AD Number: AD0824424
Abstract Text:
Material screening testing and material properties evaluation tests were conducted to select the program materials. Static wheel load, creep load, and rolling wheel load tests were conducted to determine the relationship between rolling and static loads. The results were analyzed to establish a functional thickness design criterion. Demonstration sites were prepared to evaluate shrinkage, cracking, and resistance to wheel loads. The material screening tests resulted in selection of a suitable fiber glass reinforced resin system for use in the planned program. Soil box and soil trench tests resulted in site thickness design criteria relating wheel loads and soil conditions to site thickness. A continuing material evaluation program revealed that the fabricated glass mat/polyester combination was the most satisfactory system for site fabrication.

Turbine Engine Compressor Blade Checkout
Report Number: AFAPL TR 67-59 Author(s): Bridges, J. E.; Hegner, H. R.; Knox, R. M.; Schwab, R. B.; Hehn, A. H. Corporate Author: IIT Research Inst Chicago IL Corp. Rep. Abstract Text:
The ingestion of foreign objects into jet engines causes damage in the compressor assembly which is a major safety-of-flight and maintenance problem. While the engine is installed, the checkout of jet engine compressor rotor blades is a difficult and time consuming operation. Foreign object damage is normally not found until it severely affects engine performance. Therefore, new checkout techniques need to be developed to detect foreign object damage during flight line checkout while the engine is operating. This program was initiated with an objective to demonstrate the feasibility of one or more techniques for a portable flight line checkout system that will determine foreign object damage to the compressor rotor blades of the installed jet engine. The compressor blades are to be inspected without requiring personnel to gain access to the engine front end and while the engine is motoring, idling, and running at 100 percent power or any setting in between.
