Abstract Text:
The report contains a summary of the design analysis, development testing, and demonstration testing performed to demonstrate the feasibility of using gas lubricated hydrodynamic bearings in a gas turbine environment. The gas generator portion of the jet fuel starter used on the A7D aircraft was modified to incorporate compliant-foil gas bearings and subjected to varied demonstration test. In addition, engine starts were made under conditions which simulated normal starting gear loads. Results of the testing were very satisfactory. It is concluded that gas lubricated bearings can be used in a gas turbine application and further testing is encouraged.

Abstract Text:
A rolling disc apparatus was used to obtain traction measurements for a MIL-L-7808 oil. A full matrix of data covering a range of loads, speeds, and temperatures are presented along with analytical correlation which reasonably describes the data over these parameters. Attempts were made to measure film thickness with optical, capacitance, and X-ray measuring techniques. The partial elastohydrodynamic regime was studied analytically and experimentally. Electrical continuity and resistance data have been obtained and comparisons between measured electrical resistance and predictions obtained with the asperity interactions analysis put forth in Task 2 were obtained.
