Aerodynamic Stability and Control/Wind Tunnel Data Correlation

Report Number: AFFDL TR 71-3

Corporate Author: North American Rockwell Corporation

Abstract Text:

The general objective was to collect and analyze aerodynamic stability and control data for the XV-4B, XV-5A, and P-1127 VTOL configurations. Correlation and analysis of existing model data were made to investigate hover and transition characteristics. Particular emphasis was placed on the aerodynamic power effects, sometimes referred to as interference effects. Other areas of investigation were sometimes referred to as interference effects. Other areas of investigation were nondimensional coefficients used to present VTOL data and wind tunnel test techniques. Wind tunnel tests were conducted using an inlet only model and a jet only model to investigate special test and analysis problems for these components. The agreement between different sets of XV-4B model data was, in general, found to be poor. However, the nondimensional coefficients used by Lockheed to reduce to XV-4B model data appear to be valid parameters for this category of VTOL airplane. The jet entrainment flow was shown by experiment to be the primary cause of the XV-4B power effects, and the XV-4B jet path was experimentally and theoretically determined.

Air-Cushion Pressure During Stiff-Operation for Air-Cushion Landing Systems. Part II. Experiments.

Abstract Text:

The report describes the experimental verification of the theory developed in Part I for ACLS in its stiff-mode operation. It also reports the discharge coefficient data required for computing air flow requirements. At low ground clearances, the theory was verified to be in excellent agreement with the experimental data obtained. At higher values of the ground clearance where the viscous flow theory is not expected to hold, appreciable difference between the experimental data and theoretical computation was observed. A multi-jet theory yet to be developed is expected to bridge the gap.

Abstract Text:

The Air Cushion Landing System is a scheme to replace the wheeled landing gear on aircraft by a peripheral jet air cushion. The concept employs a flexible elastic membrane or 'trunk' which is attached to the bottom of the aircraft fuselage. During flight, the trunk shrinks elastically and hugs the bottom of the fuselage like a de-icing boot. When a flow of air is applied to the inside of the trunk, the elastic material stretches and forms an elongated doughnut-shaped protrusion on the underside of the aircraft. The air flow is ducted by the trunk to the fuselage periphery and exhausted through a large number of holes or slots. As a result, a pressure builds up under the aircraft when the ground is approached. The pressure is sufficient to support the aircraft and absorb its vertical landing velocity. The study develops analytical relationships between the variables associated with the Air Cushion Landing System. Included are the following: The derivation of a theory which predicts the static characteristics of the system; Analytical methods for predicting flow, jet height and power requirements; Curves which illustrate the interrelationships among the design variables; Computer programs for predicting the cross-sectional area and shape of the elastic trunk; The development and test of an analytical model which predicts the dynamic response of the system to landing impact; A discussion of the design considerations for the system.

Abstract Text:

The concern in the work reported is the development of a dynamic precision weapon delivery system model for analyzing the effects of system parameters and disturbances on delivery performance. In addition, a methodology of precision weapon delivery flight control design is developed, without considering the pilot as a control element. The aircraft model accommodates a wide variety of airframe nonlinear dynamics, control points and methods and measurement systems. The bomb model is general enough for a variety of dive-bomb angles, release altitudes and release speeds. The circular error probable (CEP) at impact is chosen as a measure of weapon delivery performance, and a technique is developed for relating the effects of flight control parameters, airframe dynamics, measurement errors and gust disturbances to this measure by using the system model. Demonstration analysis is performed to show how to identify critical system parameters with regard to the delivery of an iron bomb and to illustrate how the method of analysis can be used. Digital computer subprograms (in FORTRAN 4 language) were developed and documented implementing the mathematical models.

Abstract Text:

The testing and use of ADAPS is demonstrated by performing an analysis with a specified iron bomb (M117) and a representative tactical fighter-bomber aircraft (F4). The demonstration example revealed no appreciable performance difference between the time-invariant and time-invariant and time-varying optimal controllers for the weapon delivery process. The contribution matrix of an iron bomb indicated that the major contributors to the CEP are the velocity and the attitude-state errors at release.

Abstract Text:

The compatibility between maneuver load control, relaxed static stability, and flying qualities requirements is investigated in the report. Three steps were involved in the investigation: an analysis was made of control surface combinations and their effectiveness for maneuver load control when used with an airplane having shortened tail length and reduced tail surface area, control system configurations were synthesized that minimize a weighted measure of change in drag, wing root bending moment, control surface activity and response error between a Level 1 flying qualities model and the actual T-33 airplane; and a direct optimization of the tail length, tail area and control surface deflections required to obtain a compatible compromise of the CCV objectives was performed.
