Abstract Text:

The report presents the analysis of 728 hours of testing, conducted in the Boeing V/STOL 20 x 20 ft. Wind Tunnel, on a model of a medium STOL transport with vectored thrust and jet flap powered-lift systems. The interactions between the two powered lift systems and the basic airplane aerodynamics are presented for a systematic series of configuration changes which include sweep and nacelle location.

Development and Evaluation of an Automatic Departure Prevention System and Stall Inhibitor for Fighter Aircraft

Report Number: AFFDL TR 73-29

Laboratory: Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory
Publication Date: 4/1/1973

Abstract Text:

The report documents the conceptual design, breadboard development and pilot-in-the-loop evaluation of an automatic departure prevention system and a stall inhibitor for fighter aircraft. Using the A-7D as the study aircraft, a departure boundary characterized by alpha and beta was determined from the available data. This departure boundary was then used to help design an automatic departure preventer and a stall inhibitor. An automatic departure prevention device as described in the report works smoothly and will benefit the A-7 aircraft. With just the departure preventer, the pilots could maneuver freely, with great confidence and use the full capability of the airplane, well beyond the present departure boundary.

Abstract Text:

The report documents the results of a study performed for the United States Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory to identify the high angle of attack post stall aerodynamic stability and control characteristics of the F-4 aircraft from existing full scale and radio-controlled drop model test data and to correlate these results with similar characteristics obtained from wind tunnel tests. A parameter identification procedure was set up to extract these nonlinear characteristics from flight test records using a nonlinear iterated Kalman filter/fixed-point smoother algorithm and a least square equation error method. Model form is established from wind tunnel data by representing the aerodynamic coefficients by Taylor's series expansions for selected ranges of angle of attack.

Methods for Predicting the Aerodynamic and Stability and Control Characteristics of STOL Aircraft. Volume I. Basic Theoretical Methods.

Abstract Text:

The primary goal of the study has been the development of a unified set of analytical methods which would provide the capability to calculate the stability and control characteristics of an arbitrary STOL aircraft configuration that might employ the internally ducted jet flap, externally blown jet flap, or a mechanical high lift system with vectored thrust. This volume presents the complete theoretical development of the relevant analytical methods. In addition, it presents comparisons of these methods with other analytical solutions and with experimental data.

Acoustic Fatigue of Aircraft Structures at Elevated Temperatures

Report Number: AFFDL TR 73-155 Part 1
Author(s): Cecil W. Schneider
Corporate Author: Lockheed-Georgia Company
Corp. Rep. Number: LG73ER0182
Laboratory: Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory
Publication Date: 3/1/1974
Pages: 219
Contract: F33615-72-C-1141
Project: 1471
Task: 147101
AD Number: AD0920282

Abstract Text:

An analytical and experimental program was conducted to develop acoustic fatigue design criteria for aircraft structures subjected to intense noise in a high temperature environment. Equations for the dynamic response of a buckled panel were formulated for simply supported boundary conditions using large deflection plate theory. Random amplitude acoustic fatigue testing of representative aircraft structure was accomplished at temperatures up to 600 F to provide data for correlation with the analytical results. Empirical design criteria are presented in the form of design equations and nomographs for predicting the combined thermal and dynamic response of aircraft structures.
