Abstract Text:

A review of the historical development of the 1.5 structural factor of safety for airplanes, the 1.4 factor for manned space vehicles, and the 1.25 factor for missiles is presented from an Air Force perspective. Several variations and experimental applications of the factor of safety design concept and reliability based design concepts are also reviewed to show their interaction. Although not without criticism, the factor of safety design concept has become an almost universally accepted measure of flight safety. There is, however, a tendency among engineers to both challenge the continued application of factors of safety for efficient airframe design, and yet to avoid any changes that would challenge the confidence of future designs. The use of reliability based concepts will probably increase but their application to airframe design may be limited. The factor of safety still covers many contingencies and it appears at this time there will be a continuing need for some factor.

Abstract Text:

A Preliminary Design Study of large turbulent flow military transport aircraft has been made. The study airplanes were designed to carry a heavy payload (350,000 lb) for a long range (10,000 nmi). The study tasks included: Wing geometry/cruise speed optimization of a large cantilever wing military transport airplane; Preliminary design and performance evaluation of a strut-braced wing transport airplane; and Structural analyses of large-span cantilever and strut-braced wings of graphite/epoxy sandwich construction (1985 technology). The best cantilever wing planform for minimum takeoff gross weight, and minimum fuel requirements, as determined using statistical weight evaluations, has a high aspect ratio, low sweep, low thickness/chord ratio, and a cruise Mach number of 0.76. A near optimum wing planform with greater speed capability (M = 0.78) has an aspect ratio = 12, quarter chord sweep = 20 deg, and thickness/chord ratio of 0.14/0.08 (inboard/outboard).

Abstract Text:

This volume presents, in summary form, the geometric and aerodynamic data used as a basis for the design guidelines presented in Volume I. The summaries have been divided into eight sections, the first seven being the low speed tests, which include almost all the configuration development studies and most of the high AOA testing. Data summaries for the transonic and supersonic testing form the eighth and last section. Because of the considerable quantity of data available from all the testing (some test reports containing as much as thirteen volumes), it is not practical to include the summaries in all the basic aerodynamic data available. In general, only the main aerodynamic effects are presented or summarized, and for more detailed information on a particular configuration, reference should be made to the actual wind tunnel report. All the data summaries are presented in a similar way, and include the following information: a data sheet including the test report title, a summary of the report, and the test conditions; a general three view of a representative test model configuration; detailed sketches of the pertinent configurations changes; and the relevant aerodynamic data.
