Abstract Text:
This directory was prepared for the purpose of assisting development, application, and design engineers in the rapid identification of graphite materials and sources of supply. This is a revision and updating of the first directory published in 1963 and it is expected that continuing revision, supplements, or new editions will be needed. A total of 262 graphite products, available from 19 suppliers, atre characterized by type, manufacturing methods, analyses, and properties. For each of these products, supplier's availability on grades, sizes and shapes, price, rate or capacity of production, and delivery times are shown. An indexing system allows for the convenient finding of information on suppliers, sizes and shapes, unique characteristics, compositions, and properties.

Development of Improved Methods of Depositing Iridium Coatings on Graphite.
Report Number: AFML TR 67-195 Part 2 Author(s): Macklin, Buford A.; LaMar, Paul A. Corporate Author: General Technologies Corp Springfield VA Laboratory: Air Force Materials Laboratory Publication Date: 9/1/1968 Pages: 82 Contract: AF 33(615)-3617 Project: 7350 Task: 735002 AD Number: AD0843766 Photo Enhancement: Complete
Abstract Text:
Oxidation protection of graphite by the formation of a pore- and crack-free iridium coating has been accomplished. A multiplicity of chemical vapor deposition, fused-salt, and aquesous electrodeposition methods were evaluated for the preparation of iridium coatings. While it was possible to deposit coatings 1 to 3 mils in thickness in one processing step, such thick deposits tended to develop trees and nodules. Thick coating (3 to 8 mils) were deposited on samples provided to AFML in multiple depositions of 0.5 mils each. The entrapment of solutions from aqeuous electrodeposition caused cracking in the graphite and precluded its use for depositing iridium coatings. Efforts to form an iridium-rhenium alloy by fused-salt electrolysis and aqueous electrodeposition from electrolytes containing both elements were not successful. Only iridium was obtained from fused salts and the deposits from the aqeuous electrolytes were not homogeneous. Likewise, effortd to increase the emittance of iridium by inclusion of either ThO2 or HfO2 in iridium from fused salts were not successful. A method of nondestructive testing of the oxidation resistance of the iridium by a gas-chromatographic method showed promise as an evaluation technique.

Abstract Text:
A program was conducted to determine the feasibility and possible advantage of processing conventional creep data through the use of computer program technology and to make generally available previously unpublished creep data. Computer programs were developed to fit data, make necessary calculations, tabulate results, and plot finished curves ready for design use. Raw creep data on 24 materials conducted over several years were processed and are presented in the normal format of tensile and creep data.

Abstract Text:
The effect of operating environment and alloy composition on the nature and extent of oxidation-sulfidation attack was studied with the aid of the Lycoming environmental test rig, which operates at one atmosphere pressure. Sulfidation attack was produced by burning JP-4, JP-4R, and JP-5 fuels (sulfur contents of .02, .16, and .16 weight percent respectively) while ingesting synthetic sea water at controlled rates to yield salt/air ratios of 4ppm and 8ppm. Specimens of 11 nickel base and one cobalt base alloy were subjected to cyclic temperatures, holding at peak temperatures of 1600 F or 1750 F for ten minutes per cycle. The temperature range over which sulfidation occurred and the depth of attack increased with increasing salt-to-air ratios and with time of exposure. Good resistance to attack was generally associated with higher chromium content but high chromium alone did not guarantee good resistance to attack. Microprobe and x-ray investigations indicated that chromium-rich surface oxides provide good resistance to sulfidation and that high aluminum-titanium ratios provide good oxidation resistance.
