An Investigation of Electrodeposited Alloys for Protection of Steel Aircraft Parts
Report Number: AF TR 5692 Supplement 4 Author(s): Arch B. Tripler; Glen Fuller; Charles L. Faust Corporate Author: Battelle Memorial Institute Publication Date: 7/1/1953 Pages: 64 PB Number: PB097655S4 AD Number: AD0018113
Abstract Text:
Exploratory research was conducted to determine substitutes for Zn and Cd coatings for steel parts of aircraft. Since the coatings had to provide sacrificial (cathodic) protection for SAE 4130 steel and be capable of being electrodeposited, the search was limited to alloys of Cd or Zn and pure Mn and its alloys. Test panels with pure Mn, Mn-Zn and its alloys. Test panels with pure Mn, Mn-Zn-alloy, and Zn-Sn-alloy coatings were exposed concurrently with panels having standard coating of Zn, Cd, and chromated Zn. Cumulative results are tabulated for exposures from 60 to 302 days and from 12 and 20 mo. The pure- Mn and Mn-Zn coating were inferior to the Zn and Cd standards. The Zn-Sn-alloy coatings of 0.3-mil thickness and greater protected the underlying steel as well as the Zn and Cd standards.

Continuous Fuel Sprays
Report Number: AF TR 6067 Part 1 Author(s): R. A. Dodge; W. A. Haggerty; J. Louis York Corporate Author: University of Michigan Publication Date: 7/1/1950 Pages: 77 PB Number: PB118494 AD Number: ADB228120
Abstract Text:
The general problem of fuel spray analysis is stated and the specific items of study to be undertaken within the scope of the contract are discussed. The literature is reviewed and published theories, experimental results and techniques are critically reviewed with regard to the objectives of the current work. A photographic method of spray analysis developed to provide a means of calibrating more rapid methods for analyzing sprays is described. A mechanical electrical- device developed to accurately and quickly determine spray patternation and flow characteristics is also described. Examples of the type of information to be obtained by both the photographic method and rapid analyzing devices are presented. A bibliograpy of spray analysis and related problems is provided, the biblicgrapy being cross-indexed in a manner most convenient for the work at hand.

Continuous Fuel Sprays
Report Number: AF TR 6067 Part 3 Author(s): W. W. Hagerty Corporate Author: University of Michigan Publication Date: 12/1/1952 Pages: 100 PB Number: PB118495 AD Number: AD0014006
Abstract Text:
Basic problems in fuel-spray research are discussed. Progress is summarized on (1) studies of the disintegration mechanisms of flat and conical liquid sheets and the mechanism of flow through swirl-chamber nozzles, (2) combustion studies, (3) the development of a rapid spray analyzer, and (4) the development of a photographic technique. A photographic method was devised which did not disturb the spray. Measurements were made of the size distribution of the spray drops, the spatial location of drops of various sizes, and the velocities of the drops. A spray analyzer was constructed which gave a quick evaluation of hollow-cone nozzles; a permament record of the patternization is obtained for each test. The cone angle was measured with an attachment. A description is presented of the fluid behavior within the swirl chamber and of the spray formation after fluid emergence from the chamber to form a hyperbolic sheath. The over-all burning efficiency of the combustion chamber was substantially constant for wide variations in the patternization of a given nozzle over a range of conditions. Relatively hot regions were produced with an uneven patternization which may cause hot spots and temperature stratification in the gases striking the turbine blades. Variations in the incoming air-flow patterns produce effects similar to those of poor patternization.

Abstract Text:
The self-excited vibration of a landing gear is generated in an interplay of effects present in the tire, the landing gear proper, and in the entire airfram itself. The analysis of these simultaneous actions is given a simple form; the manner in which energy enters the system, and the necessary structural modifications to control ahimmy are explained.

Studies in Resuscitation
Report Number: AF TR 6696 Author(s): Howard G. Swann Corporate Author: University of Texas Publication Date: 9/1/1951 Pages: 7 PB Number: PB118181 AD Number: AD0000129
Abstract Text:
Resuscitation of dogs dying from acute anoxia was effected by a gas mixture of 4% O and 96% N. The pathological changes in dogs which had suffered an irreversible cerebral change from anoxia were confirmed primarily to the cerebrum. Adrenocortical lesions of unknown etiology appeared irregularly. Ventricular fibrillation during fresh-water drowning was caused by a low O tension and low plasma Na, with a constant plasma K content. Intravenous injections of NaCl prevented fibrillation from occurring but did not reverse fibrillation which had occurred. Ca did not prevent fibrllation. The limits of resuscitablility in drowning are described. Aspirated water itself, either fresh or sea, was not dangerous to the organism; danger arises from the blockage of respiratory passages, anoxia, and ventricular fibrillation. The processes of death and resuscitation in man are summarized.
