F-105F Transonic Buffet Study and Effect of Maneuvering Flaps
Report Number: AFFDL TR 69-37 Author(s): Milton Margolin; Jung G. Abstract Text:
A flight test investigation was made using a Republic F-105F aircraft to obtain data related to high subsonic-transonic buffet and the effects of utilizing a maneuvering flap. Flight tests were made at nominal altitudes of 25,000 feet and 35,00 feet. At each altitude, data was collected at three Mach numbers from level flight to maximum usable lift. A related investigation was made using a 1/22-scale model of the F-105F aircraft in the NASA Langley High-Speed Wind Tunnel. The wind tunnel tests were made at three Mach numbers (0.80, 0.85 and 0.90) and data was obtained from zero angle-of-attack to the strain gage balance limits. Flight test results compare readily to wind tunnel data. The boundary layer profiles between flight test and wind tunnel are quite similar. The angles of attack at buffet onset are also comparable. Selection of the leading edge flap and trailing edge flap deflection may be made on the basis of the greatest normal force coefficient at buffet onset, but the final criterion will be level of buffet intensity apparent to the pilot. This level may be varied with the leading edge flap deflection.

Prediction Of Supersonic Laminar Flow Separation By The Method Of Integral Relations With Free Interaction.
Report Number: AFFDL TR 69-87 Author(s): Kuhn, Gary D.; Goodwin, Frederick K.; Nielsen, Jack N. Corporate Author: Nielsen Engineering And Research Inc Palo Alto Calif Laboratory: Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory Publication Date: 1/1/1970 Pages: 104 Features: + Graph(s) Contract: F33615-68_c-1499 Project: 8219 Task: 821902 AD Number: AD0702104 Photo Enhancement: Not Needed
Abstract Text:
The report describes the development of a predictive method for calculating separated laminar boundary layers on flat-plate-wedge and cylinder-flare configurations in supersonic flow and the application of the method to predicting the effects of Mach number, Reynolds number, and temperature ratio on the properties of the boundary layer. The purpose of the report is to extend previous analytical work employing the method of integral relations to the region downstream of reattachment and to describe an interative technique developed to produce a unique solution. The theory is shown to produce good comparisons with pressure data on flat-plate-wedge configurations for both adiabatic and cold walls. Accounting for non-Blasius initial velocity profiles produced by favorable pressure gradients upstream of the beginning of interaction was shown to decrease the predicted extent of separation. For axisymmetric configurations the length of an equivalent cylinder must be calculated by an auxiliary method. Good to fair comparisons with experimental pressure distributions were produced by adjusting the equivalent cylinder length. Fair comparison was produced between the theory and experimental heat-transfer rate data on an ogive-cylinder-flare configuration. The theory is shown to predict an incipient separation wedge angle which agrees reasonably well with experimental results.

Research and Development of an Integrated Servo Actuator Package for Fighter Aircraft.

Abstract Text:
A study was conducted to determine the feasibility of implementing present day fighter and attack aircraft with integrated actuator packages in the primary flight control system. The integrated package concept results in a control system having a considerably lower vulnerability to small arms fire than the conventional control system. A Simplex actuator, containing a single self-contained hydraulic supply was designed to meet the performance and structural interface requirements of the F-4 stabilator actuator. Three units were fabricated and functionally tested. One of the Simplex units was subjected to a comprehensive qualification test. The other two units were delivered to McDonnell Aircraft Company for flight testing. A Duplex integrated actuator, containing dual self-contained hydraulic systems and quadruplex electrical input channels, was designed, built, and tested. Test results demonstrate the basic feasibility of electrically signalled integrated actuator packages. Specific recommendations for further development of the integrated package concept are included.

Abstract Text:
This report describes a mathematical model of rotorcraft that may be used to determine characteristics of performance, stability, response, and rotor blade loads. The complexity of the equations used requires the use of a digital computer for efficient solution. This four volume report describes the computer program in detail and illustrates the method of computing rotorcraft characteristics by specific example.
